Summer School Programme 2025

Shrewsbury and Shropshire

Shrewsbury School was founded by Edward VI in 1552 by Royal Charter and for over 470 years we have a proud legacy as one of the great public schools in England.

Shropshire is one of England’s most rural counties and the countryside all around Shrewsbury is some of the most beautiful and unspoilt in the country. Our unrivalled location is at the gateway to the Shropshire Hills ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ironbridge, and Wales, home to some of the most incredible scenery in Great Britain.

The School

A home to pupils from 1882, our site perfectly blends historic buildings with brand new facilities.

Our community lives and learns in an environment that combines world-class facilities delivering whole person education, with a striking spacious green campus supporting an active sports calendar as well as having space for mindfulness or relaxation.

The 110-acre site feels distinctively different from others with all school buildings surrounding our large green commons and sporting facilities, whilst also bordering the River Severn providing instant access for our boat crews.

The Town

Known as ‘Scrobbesbyrig’ in Saxon times, the town’s origins date back to the 5th and 6th centuries.

Its history is very visible: Shrewsbury has over 660 historic listed buildings, several of them dating from Tudor times. They include a Norman abbey dating back to 1083 (the setting for Ellis Peters’ ‘Brother Cadfael’ novels), a medieval castle dating from 1074, and the 16th century Old Market Hall, which now houses a cinema and café.

The town offers some of the best in independent restaurants and shop and is home to a huge indoor market which has previously been named ‘Britain’s Favourite Market’. The Quarry is a large park situated within 10 minutes’ walk of the school and provides the perfect backdrop for a summer’s day.

Our Location

Despite Shrewsbury’s rural location, travel links are plentiful and we are lucky to be able to travel across the country via road or train to some of the biggest cities in the UK.

As part of the course students will be able to visit big attractions such as the West End of London, the museums in Oxford and soak up Shakespeare in Stratford, helping to bring their studies to life and all are just a coach ride away.

Our pupils regularly travel to and from the international airports at Birmingham (1 hour by car or rail), Manchester (1 hour 15 minutes by car, with some direct trains), Liverpool and East Midlands (both 1 hour 30 minutes by car), and London Heathrow (roughly 3 hours by car).

Shrewsbury is served by Avanti trains from London Euston (by changing at Birmingham New Street or Wolverhampton).  There are also regular services from Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Oxford, Cardiff and Bristol.

Shrewsbury station is just the far side of the centre of the town from the school, and is approximately 20 minutes’ walk away but there is a reliable taxi service outside of the station.
