Shrewsbury History and Shropshire
Shrewsbury School was founded by Edward VI in 1552 by Royal Charter and for over 470 years we have a proud legacy as one of the great public schools in England.
Shropshire is one of England’s most rural counties and the countryside all around Shrewsbury is some of the most beautiful and unspoilt in the country. Our unrivalled location is at the gateway to the Shropshire Hills ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ironbridge, and Wales, home to some of the most incredible scenery in Great Britain.
The town offers some of the best in independent restaurants and shop and is home to a huge indoor market which has previously been named ‘Britain’s Favourite Market’. The Quarry is a large park situated within 10 minutes’ walk of the school and provides the perfect backdrop for a summer’s day.
Despite Shrewsbury’s rural location, travel links are plentiful and we are lucky to be able to travel across the country via road or train to some of the biggest cities in the UK. As part of the course students will be able to visit big attractions such as the West End of London, the museums in Oxford and soak up Shakespeare in Stratford, helping to bring their studies to life and all are just a coach ride away.
